CUNY ASRC highlighted in Architectural Record

The CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) was featured in the most recent issue of Architectural Record as one of a handful of examples of innovative architecture in academic buildings.

Along with the City College of New York’s Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI), the article specifically noted the design by architect Kohn Pederson Fox Associates “promote(s) social interaction and interdisciplinary collaboration.”

The ASRC hosts scientists conducting scientific research and education in five distinctive, but increasingly interconnected disciplines: Nanoscience, Photonics, Structural Biology, Neuroscience and Environmental Sciences. Led by Dr. Gillian Small, Vice Chancellor for Research and the ASRC’s executive director, the center is designed to promote a unique, interdisciplinary research culture. Researchers from each initiative work alongside each other in the ASRC’s core facilities, utilizing equipment that is among the most advanced available.

Beyond the interior design choices that have produced a haven for science, expressed consideration was given to how the buildings would fit into their environment. Hana Kassem, a director at Kohn Pederson Fox, reiterated the firm’s desire to design “a space that envelopes, and not buildings that overwhelm you,” and thanks to a welcoming plaza highlighted by a butterfly garden, tall grasses and birch trees, the space achieves it.
