Research Interests
My research goals are to develop new materials or composite materials for hermetic barriers for electronic industry, anticorrosive materials for airspace and automotive industry and hydroxyapatite based nanocomposite for biomedical bone regeneration and prosthetic applications. The sol-gel process is a versatile method that has the ability to combine inorganic with organic phases producing hybrid organic-inorganic materials. These materials are not simply the sum of the individual contributions of each phase, but unique hybrid materials due to synergistic combinations of properties of both components. My studies range from the elucidation of early stages of formation of the hybrid materials by sol-gel process to the design of hybrid nanocomposite materials with magnetic, gas-sensing, electric and optical properties. My research fulfilled during my years at Lehman-CUNY was mainly focused to developing a new class of materials called Hybrid Melting Gels for hermetic barriers, anticorrosive and optical applications. However, a wide range of studies on nanoparticles or nanocomposites in different systems have been carried out using the sol-gel method. Beside the melting gels and hybrid glasses my group study: the formation of stable silver nanoparticles sols for medical diagnostic and drug delivery; the preparation of core/shell nanoparticles for hydrogen peroxide biosensors, study of Layer Double Hydroxides for fuel cell applications and the novel approaches in preparation of LaCoO3 for battery applications.
