Gabriele Grosso, Ph.D.

  • Assistant Professor, Photonics Initiative
  • Assistant Professor of Physics, The Graduate Center, CUNY

Gabriele Grosso’s research focuses on the optical properties of 2D materials (matter consisting of a single layer of atoms), which show promise for enabling the design and development of leapfrog technologies such as quantum information-processing systems  and opto-electronic devices. His research is at the forefront in the realization of a scalable photonic platform for use in next-generation quantum technologies.

Grosso was most recently a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where his work at the Quantum Photonic Laboratory explored use of 2D semiconductor materials for quantum optics applications; nanofabrication and characterization of new devices for quantum computing.

Prior to his post-doctoral work, Grosso completed his Ph.D. in physics at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. He received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Padua, Italy, where he graduated magna cum laude.

Grosso has been a lead author or author on more than 30 peer-reviewed papers and conference proceedings in the photonics field, and he was the recipient of the Swiss National Science Foundation Mobility Grant in 2014 and 2016.
