SUMMARY:Environmental Sciences Seminar: Zachary Tessler\, Environmental Sciences Initiative\, ASRC
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Git for Scientific Software Development and Collaboration\nSpeaker\nZachary Tessler\nEnvironmental Sciences Initiative\, ASRC \nAbstract\nGit is a software tool for managing and sharing code\, and is often used for collaboration through GitHub (or Bitbucket\, or GitLab\, or …). \nIf you write any code\, or regularly use open-source software\, git is a tool to make your life easier\, though it has a somewhat steep learning curve. For instance\, it allows you to make changes to your code\, and then easily roll everything (or just some) back if you need. You can see a history of changes\, roll back to old versions\, share with other collaborators\, even recover from accidental deletion of files. \nThis workshop will introduce you to what git offers\, basic use of git for managing code changes and branching\, basics of remote repositories\, and using GitHub to access or contribute to open-source software. \nBring a laptop if you can. Please install git first\, from https://git-scm.com/downloads (or a from a package manager). Also make a free account at GitHub (https://github.com).

SUMMARY:Nanoscience Seminar: Dimitri Deheyn\, University of California\, San Diego
DESCRIPTION:Living Light: Towards Understanding the Fundamental Mechanism of Color & Light Production in Nature\nSpeaker\nDimitri Deheyn\, Ph.D.\nUniversity of California\, San Diego \nDimitri Deheyn is a Scripps marine biologist developing research in the field of biomimicry: the process of emulating Nature to support green and sustainable innovations for various industries. His research aims at understanding the fundamental mechanisms responsible for specific adaptations organisms have developed to thrive under particular conditions\, in aquatic or terrestrial environments. The findings can then be used for biotechnological\, biomedical and/or bioengineering applications\, thus improving societal needs through biomimicry\, or bioinspiration. Inherently\, his research covers a broad range of topics\, including UV-protection\, bioadhesion/anti-biofouling\, biophotonics and biomaterials with unusual combination of properties. His research also relates to “living light”\, the production of light through bioluminescence (visible light produced following a chemical reaction) or through fluorescence (visible light produced following excitation with a blue or black light)\, but also through structural coloration and iridescence (visible coloration from “filtering or manipulating” sunlight). Change in living lights can then be used as reporter for biosensing. All these biological properties are at the intersect with material science and bioengineering\, making Deheyn’s expertise cross disciplinary and bridging the gap between academia and industry\, for which he founded the BEST Initiative (Biomimicry for Emerging Science and Technology). \nDeheyn earned his Ph.D. on fundamental and applied aspects of bioluminescence in 1998\, from the Free Thinking University of Brussels (ULB)\, Belgium. In 1999\, he moved to Scripps Institution of Oceanography where he is now an Associate Research Scientist\, to work on the applications of living lights\, and to a broader sense biomimicry.

SUMMARY:Environmental Sciences Seminar: Joint Briefing On Private Sector-Academic Partnerships In Sustainable Impact Investing
DESCRIPTION:Selecting and managing financial assets based on social and environmental performance is undergoing rapid growth and fundamental change. Investors are increasingly pressed by asset owners to prove how one company’s practices are more or less sustainable than those of another. Yet\, sustainability measures that companies declare are hardly standardized and difficult to verify\, with metrics often restricted to documenting changes to internal business practices. This offers limited guidance on whether a company’s actions\, products\, and services promote human well-being or preserve environmental integrity. It is here where science can play an important role. Using lessons-learned through a partnership between CUNY\, UBS\, and PGGM\, this seminar will discuss challenges and opportunities to apply science-based metrics within a decision-making framework that is useful to investors and policy planners. Beyond reliance on self-disclosed corporate reports\, we ask the question: What opportunities exist for corporate and investment decision-makers to draw productively on Earth System and other sciences? Answering this question requires a more comprehensive approach to impact measurement based on a strategic alliance of asset owners and managers\, companies\, auditors\, NGOs\, and scientists.

SUMMARY:Photonics Seminar: Massimo Ruzzene\, Pratt and Whitney Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering\, Georgia Tech
DESCRIPTION:Dynamics of Topological Metastructures:  Nonlinearities and Quasi-periodicity\nSpeaker:\nMassimo Ruzzene\nPratt and Whitney Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech \nAbstract\nTopology has recently emerged as a principle governing unique wave transport phenomena through interface or edge modes that are impurity-immune and potentially unidirectional. In mechanics\, these phenomena arise by marrying the notion of material and structure\, and are expected to lead to functionalities at the mesoscale that are unattainable solely based on the properties of constituents. Beyond the mere notion of a material\, these meta-structures draw their unique characteristics from their finite size and the existence of interfaces. The resulting structural assemblies are expected to feature unprecedented performance in terms of stress wave mitigation\, wave guiding\, acoustic absorption\, and vibration isolation. \nThe seminar illustrates investigations on the effects of nonlinearities on topological properties\, and the study of quasi-periodic assemblies. Investigation of the effects of nonlinearities on topological properties allows the exploration of the appearance/robustness of edge and localized modes in the presence of nonlinearities. In addition\, the study of lattices with quasi-periodic configurations uncover additional unique properties related to vibration localization in one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems. These can be as interesting if not more useful than the interface modes that are found in periodic structures\, as the quasi-periodicity framework provides a consistent methodology that leads to vibration confinement in systems that are not ordered\, but are described by deterministic property distributions. Beam and plate structures with quasiperiodic arrangements of grounding springs and lumped masses are presented as structural components which support a variety of localized modes and that are suitable for the experimental characterization of the dynamic behavior of these configurations. \nAbout the Speaker\nMassimo Ruzzene is the Pratt and Whitney Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. He is author of 2 books\, 135 journal papers and about 180 conference papers\, and has participated to projects funded by the AFOSR\, ARO\, ONR\, NASA\, US Army\, US Navy\, DARPA\, and NSF\, as well as numerous companies. His work focuses on solid mechanics\, structural dynamics and wave propagation with application to structural health monitoring\, metamaterials\, and vibration & noise control. M. Ruzzene is a Fellow of ASME\, an Associate Fellow of AIAA\, and a member of AHS\, and ASA.
