DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, April 29\, 2022 at 2 p.m. for a media-skills building session that includes an opportunity to talk about your research with working science reporters from Scientific American\, Science Friday\, PBS and more. \nNow more than ever it’s critical for science to be accessible and understandable to the public. In this Communicating Your Science Workshop\, hosted in partnership with CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism\, we will cover how to distill your complex science into compelling talking points for the public and communicate your work to science reporters. \nAll are welcome\, but you must reserve an interview slot and complete a short talking points worksheet as part of your registration if you want to meet with a reporter. One-on-one interviews are available to 21 registrants on a first come\, first serve basis. SUMMARY:CCNY Inaugural Harry Lustig Lecture: Arthur I. Miller
DESCRIPTION:Please join the CCNY Physics Department for a one- hour lecture from alumni\, Arthur I Miller. The topic of his lecture will be art-science-technology\, based on his recent book The Artist in the Machine: The World of AI-Powered Creativity. \nAIs are already creating works that we recognize as art. But does this make them truly artists? Can AIs possess the attributes of living beings even though they are alien life forms? If and when this is the case\, their intelligence will no longer be ‘artificial’ but as real as ours. In my talk I will focus on the exciting art\, literature and music already being created by artificial neural networks and consider the key issue of whether machines can be creative like us. \n  \nArthur I. Miller is a CCNY Physics graduate\, went on to MIT PhD.  After faculty positions at U of Massachusetts and Harvard\, he became in 1991 Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at UCL.  He is the author of a groundbreaking theory of creativity which applies to both humans and machines. He has written many critically acclaimed books\, including the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Einstein\, Picasso: Space\, Time\, and the Beauty that Causes Havoc; 137: Jung\, Pauli\, and the Pursuit of a Scientific Obsession; and The Artist in the Machine: The World of AI-Powered Creativity. \n____________________________________________________________ \nThe Harry Lustig Lecture is supported by the Harry Lustig Fund\, established 2020 in honor of Harry Lustig\, a 1948 CCNY Physics graduate who from 1964 as Dept Chair\, Dean of Science\, and Vice-President for Academic Affairs & Provost of CCNY helped transform CCNY from world-class teaching institution into a world-class research institution.  After retirement 1993\, he went on to be treasurer of American Physical Society and Acting Executive Secretary. \n  \nThis hybrid event will take place in the ASRC Auditorium at 4pm\, with drinks and food served beforehand\, at 3:30pm. \nPlease register here  for the event. DESCRIPTION:Converge to Transform: Interdisciplinary STEM Seminar Series\n  \n​​​​​​January 20th\n10 am to 11am via Zoom\nJoin us for the next speaker in this series: Benjamin A Garcia\, PhD\, Raymond H. Wittcoff Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the Washington University School of Medicine\, in St. Louis. Dr. Garcia will present a talk titled: \nQuantitative Proteomics for Understanding Cancer Epigenetics \nIn it he will describe how histones\, small proteins that package DNA into chromosomes\, control gene expression\, are regulated by epigenetic mechanisms\, and play a role in cancer when dysregulated. \nDr. Garcia’s research has led to important observations about the regulation of cell differentiation\, growth of tissues\, and the development of cancer. The Garcia Lab specializes in high-throughput and quantitative analysis of many classes of modified proteins but are particularly interested in understanding the roles of proteins PTMs during cancer pathogenesis\, neurodegeneration\, cell differentiation and viral infection. Such analyses can shed light on basic biology and disease processes. His methods have revolutionized analysis of proteins and genetics of cells from animal models and human samples. Such research has led to important observations about the regulation of cell differentiation\, growth of tissues\, and the development of cancer. In addition to cancer\, his lab studies the role and regulation of epigenetics in neurodegenerative diseases\, such as Alzheimer’s disease. \nThe seminar will be held virtually\, therefore please register here\, before 9am on Thursday January 20th. Solutions to these challenges will not be realized within siloed areas of research\, but through the kinds of dynamic\, innovative thought produced when researchers work across disciplines. Thus\, the ASRC is hosting a new seminar series for the 2021-22 academic year to highlight outstanding\, high impact\, inspiring interdisciplinary STEM research for the public good. The series will bring together researchers across many disciplines as well as enrich CUNY’s undergraduate\, graduate\, and postdoctoral trainees educational experiences. Speakers in this series will present recent advances in nanomaterials\, nanotechnology\, imaging\, computational biology\, environmental impacts on human health\, epigenetics\, and molecular and cellular causes of cancer and neurodegeneration. \nJoin us on Friday\, November 5 at 12pm for the second speaker in this series: Robert Wright\, MD\, MPH\, Ethel H. Wise Chair of the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health\, and Director of The Institute for Exposomic Research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He will give a talk titled Exposomics\, Medicine and Public Health. \nA pediatrician\, medical toxicologist\, and environmental epidemiologist\, Dr. Wright studies chemical mixtures\, social stressors as a modifier of chemical toxicity\, and the role of genetics/epigenetics in modifying or mediating chemical toxicity. He is an international advocate for research on exposomics—the measure of all health relevant human exposure throughout the lifespan. Solutions to these challenges will not be realized within siloed areas of research\, but through the kinds of dynamic\, innovative thought produced when researchers work across disciplines. Thus\, the ASRC hosts a new seminar series for the 2021-22 academic year to highlight outstanding\, high impact\, inspiring interdisciplinary STEM research for the public good. The series will bring together researchers across many disciplines as well as enrich CUNY’s undergraduate and graduate student and postdoctoral fellow training experiences. Speakers in this series will present recent advances in nanomaterials\, nanotechnology\, imaging\, computational biology\, environmental impacts on human health\, epigenetics\, and molecular and cellular causes of cancer and neurodegeneration. \nThe first speaker in this series\, Mikhail Shapiro\, PhD\, Professor of Chemical Engineering\, Caltech\, will give a talk titled\, “Talking to cells: technologies to image and control cellular function deep inside the body.” Prof. Shapiro joined the Caltech faculty in 2014 after receiving his BS in Neuroscience at Brown University and his PhD in Biological Engineering at MIT. At MIT\, he worked with Alan Jasanoff to develop novel contrast agents and protein nanoparticles for magnetic resonance imaging of specific neurochemicals. After a short stint at Third Rock Ventures\, he took a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago with Francisco Bezanilla and then became a Miller Research Fellow at the University of California – Berkeley.

The voice of scientists is critical in signaling the impact and importance of a discovery and advocating for good scientific policies. Our February Science Op-ed Writing Bootcamp will take you through the elements of creating a compelling opinion piece that informs and helps the public take actions to ensure that science improves their lives and the planet. SUMMARY:Best-Practices for Youth Science Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Youth and Community Engagement\nIn this workshop we’ll explore what ‘engagement’ with youth and community members really means.  Often\, as scientists\, we think our role in public engagement is to bring science out into communities but part of the work is also to bring communities into our work.  In order to build these relationships we have to craft our method of communication which includes both sharing our knowledge and also listening. We will explore some interactive activities to build skills in playful storytelling and how to let our youth and community members be teachers to us as well. Taught by Kendra Krueger\, the ASRC’s Science Education Coordinator and founder of the Community Sensor Lab. Krueger has a BS and MS in electrical engineering and has worked as an educator\, artist and community organizer. \nThere will be opportunity for Q&A. \nYou can sign-up here for this event. DESCRIPTION:Meet the Editor: Open Access Journal Publication\nJoin us on October 16\, 2020 at 1 p.m. for a session with eLife Editor-In-Chief Michael Eisen and Nature Communications Editor-in-Chief Elisa De Ranieri\, where we’ll discuss considerations for publishing with open-access journals. \nBy doing away with paywalls\, open-access journals are endeavoring to democratize scientific learning and more quickly advance discovery. There are a growing number of these journals for scientists to consider when making decisions about research paper submission\, and they each have content\, protocol and a peer review process that are unique to their publishing missions. SUMMARY:Virtual Film Screening: PICTURE A SCIENTIST
DESCRIPTION:Join the CUNY ASRC and CUNY Office of Research for a virtual screening of PICTURE A SCIENTIST\, a film that chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins\, chemist Raychelle Burks\, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences\, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way\, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations\, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists\, neuroscientists\, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse\, equitable\, and open to all. \nPICTURE A SCIENTIST was an official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival\, postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s virtual theatrical run reached 47 theaters across the USA in June 2020\, and raised money for two organizations advancing women of color in STEM. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:The Urban Public University as an Engine of Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Please join the CUNY ASRC and CUNY Graduate School of Public Health on Tuesday\, July 7 for the next session of the Thriving after Massive Global Disruption webinar series hosted by the University of Strathclyde (UK) and involving partner Universities from across the globe. \nTuesday\, July 7\, 2020\, 9:00 a.m. ET\nREGISTER: https://bit.ly/ThriveAfterPandemic \nThe COVID-19 pandemic is a stark example of how crises inevitably impact marginalized and poor people most. In the United States\, the virus continues to infect Black and Latinx communities at a disproportional rate\, and these communities experience worse health outcomes. Myriad underlying racial\, ethnic and economic disparities led to this\, and these disparities are exacerbated by the repercussions of the pandemic. Our panel will address three relevant areas simultaneously in crisis in the United States: public health\, the environment\, and public education. The interconnectedness of these crises is especially apparent in dense and diverse urban environments like New York City\, and the crafted solutions must meet local needs. We will explore how urban public higher education and convergent research can help lead the charge toward finding and implementing solutions to this complex and interwoven set of crises. \nWe will discuss: \n\nHow public urban universities like CUNY and interdisciplinary research centers like the CUNY ASRC can play a catalytic role in helping cities thrive by driving diverse STEM workforce development\, rethinking the curriculum to promote convergence and systems thinking\, and promoting data-driven policymaking.\nThe role of convergent research in realizing effective solutions and the development and democratization of state-of-the-art scientific technologies that help predict\, quantify\, prevent and counter environmental issues and future pandemics.\n\nPanelists:  \nRein Ulijn is director of the ASRC Nanoscience Initiative\, director of the ASRC Center for Advanced Technologies in Sensors (Sensor CAT) and Einstein Professor of Chemistry at Hunter College. Ulijn’s research\, educational and administrative roles span developing sustainable nanoscience solutions that have applications in health care and environmental mitigation and driving workforce development and science technology startups in New York. \nLuisa Borrell is a Distinguished Professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics\, Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy\, City University of New York (CUNY). Her research interest is on race and ethnicity\, socioeconomic position\, and neighborhood effects as social determinants of health. She has expertise in racial/ethnic disparities in health and oral health\, research methods and the analysis of large databases\, including survey\, census and spatially linked data. She has published on the areas of race/ethnicity\, socioeconomic position\, and neighborhood effects on health and oral outcomes as well as mortality. \nCharlie Vörösmarty is Director of the ASRC Environmental Sciences Initiative and Einstein Professor of Civil Engineering at the City College of New York. His research focuses on the development of computer models and geospatial data sets used in synthesis studies of the interactions among the water cycle\, climate\, biogeochemistry and anthropogenic activities. His work on human-water interactions includes earth system modeling of the Northeastern United States\, development and analysis of databases depicting reservoir construction worldwide and how they generate downstream coastal zone risks\, and global threats to human water security and aquatic biodiversity. \nAnnette “Nina” Gray is Executive Director of the ASRC and Associate Dean for the Sciences at The Graduate Center\, CUNY. She oversees all ASRC operations\, research activities\, and educational initiatives. She also develops programs and partnerships to enhance interdisciplinary scientific research and education in order to advance the center’s vision to improve human\, societal\, and environmental well-being in the decades to come. \nHost:
